Year 8 ICT – My favourite project so far

Hello Quad bloggers! My name is Lewis Maskell and I come from Worthing a small sunny (sometimes!) town. I go to Durrington High school and I’m in year 8. We’ve been learning about all sorts of thing in I.T. We’ve done safety on the internet, and we chose a controversial topic to writer about, but my favourite thing we’ve done so far was a topic called THE SHOW!
We had to design our own theatre seating plan using Microsoft Excel and by using formulas such as countif, we also designed and made a ticket for our theatre, and we designed a banner to promote our theatre. We used excel to design our theatre seating plan. This is what I did below for my seating plan. Hope you like it….!

We coloured the different boxes depending on the price of the seats. Yellow was the most expensive with dark green as the least. I also made a ticket and a banner for my theatre.

I have really enjoyed working on this project because it has been really interesting and I have learnt a lot of new skills such as how to create formulas in Excel and how to use Photoshop to make banners and posters.  I now know how to create basic formulas which I didn’t know how to do before, and I hope we do something like this again soon.

Thank you for reading my blog post! – Lewis Maskell

  1. Lewis-
I enjoyed seeing your theater plan and learning about how you applied technology to a real world problem. My students would also be interested in hearing about what your ‘controversial topic’ was in your previous assignment.
We are studying ‘world cultures’ and are looking forward to learning more about what the students in England think about various events in history, as well as things that are unique to your culture.
    thanks, Mrs. Hansell

  2. Dear Lewis
Good work and written in an engaging style. This also demonstrates how you are using skills from different subjects to develop your work, well done.

    • Hello Vivien, I’m glad your doing the same subject as us so you know what we are talking about. What sort of things do you do in Shatin College? What type of things did you do in Year 6, and what things are you doing in Year 7?

  3. Hi friends~ this is Reagan, Caroline, and Morgan. Our favorite subject is biology. What’s yours? When do you have breaks and holidays? We love summer! 🙂

    • Hello this is Ann-Marie and Erin. Biology is very good! Our faviourite subject is Art and D.T. We break up in two weeks for half term. We also have inset days, which are fun! We also love summer. But a lot of the time we have a lot of rain. But when it’s not raining it is really relaxing. Whats your favourite part about the summer? When do you have holidays? 🙂

  4. Hello Lewis,
In America, gun control is an important issue here. Due to the recent shootings, for example Sandy Hook. We would like to know what you think about gun control. Last year over 11,000 people were killed by guns. In England, 36 people were killed. Do you think guns should be banned? Or that there should only be restrictions?

  5. Hello Lewis. How old are you? Do you have any pets? What sports do you play? Are you going to watch the Super Bowl? What’s your favorite rugby team? Do you like Manchester United? I like Chelsea. From Grant, Graham, Bailey, and Rebecca.

  6. Hello Lewis,
We have a few questions to ask you. First, is your mascot a seahorse? Have any of you ever been to Texas? What do you do for fun? What is your favorite american food?

  7. Hello Lewis,
Do you enjoy listening to music by famous British singers like Ed Sheeran and Adele? Did music inspire you to design the theater? Have you been to America? I have not visited England but I want to! Do you like Harry Potter? What are some American sterotypes? Do you think any of them are true?

  8. Hey Lewis! We were wondering your age. Our grade divisions are different than yours. We are in 9th grade, which makes us 14-15 years old. We would like to know what you want to be when you finish highschool or your University?

    From,
    Kate, Emma, Haley, and Georgia

  9. Hi Lewis! We, at ESD, do not have an I.T. class, but we do have a Website Design, Robotics, and Animation class. Your class sounds very fun and interesting. We thought it was cool to see your theatre seating plan. Thanks for sharing!

  10. Lewis-

This is 2nd Period from Navasota, Texas. We are working on a project on making a proposal to remodel our school courtyard. We just started it a few days ago.

We would like to know what kind of sports you and your classmates play?

We are in the 7th grade, meaning we are 12-14 years old. How old is someone in year 8? What does year 8 mean?

What kind of music do you listen to?

What kind of food do you eat?

  11. Hello Lewis,

How long did it take you to design your theater?

Do you like playing basketball, volleyball, or what sports do you like? Do you play video games?

Does your school have a cheer team?

Is your school mascot the seahorse, ours is the Fangs.

Do you and your friends use slang when talking? For example, we say things like What’s up? meaning how are you or what’s going on.

    • Hi

It took about 2-3 lessons which are an hour each to design the spread sheet and create our formulas so we knew how many seats we had sold and how much money we had made, without having to count them ourselves.

Yes i like playing computer games and I also play football. I don’t think we do have a cheerleading team.
Yes our mascot is the Seahorse and it’s on all of our ties. But we have different colour ties depending on what ‘company’ we’re in. There are 6 companies and they are – Coubertin (red), Roddick (green), Da Vinci (purple), Shelley (yellow), Franklin (white) and Mercator (blue). They are named aftrer famous people who have been enterprising or had good ideas/created good things.

Thanks for looking at our blog 🙂
